When we are developing a new product to add to the Aussie Gardener range, we look at comparable tools in the market and see how we can improve on them. One of the failings of these type of hand digging tools is they rust and the steel rod that goes into the handle, usually only goes a short distance in. Over time the tool ends up snapping at that point.
To solve this we designed them to have the stainless steel rod go 70mm into the handle so that it maintains it's strength long term. Most other hand tools would only be 40-50mm.
When we tested this product it originally came with a leather strap and hole drilled through the end of the handle. This hole rubbed against your hand during use and made it uncomfortable to use. The strap would also be the first part to fail so we removed this, made the handle smooth and instead added the stainless steel eylet to the end.
Using stainless steel throughout the whole tool will prevent them rusting. The steel used is 2mm thick plate and 9mm diameter on the centre rod.
Use Linseed or tung oils to protect and maintain the timber handles.
